Vogue Italia and looking forward to the year ahead

This time last year I was running to catch a plane to Beziers to shoot at the amazing Chateau Les Carrrasses (See that shoot here), after shooting an editorial inspired by the Great Gatsby (See shoot here) the day before. And I visited my favourite place in the world, Paris. It was FUN. This January, with all the overcast weather and a fairly quiet month, I’ve been looking back at January last year and thinking how awesome it was. I’m planning things for this year which will be epic, and ALL of the couples who’s weddings I’m shooting this year are such cool people- from Suffolk in March to Cornwall in October, I’ll be capturing the story of their big days across the UK and beyond and I can’t wait.

In the meantime, this cheered me up on a cold January day.

This is one of three images I have had published on Italian Vogue’s website! Being published on Italian Vogue is a milestone for my editorial work and has definitely cheered me up! I’ll be starting to photograph 2013′s couple’s engagement shoots soon in the spring, and nothing makes me more happy than doing this- photographing people in love. My editorial work gives me the chance to practise my creativity, the experience of which I’ll be using to discreetly capture the story of my couples weddings.. cant wait.

Portraits of an Actress

The wedding season is all wrapped up for me for 2012, but I’m already looking forward to the best year yet in 2013. I’ll be travelling around the UK, from Suffolk to Cornwall with most places in between, lucky enough to photograph the most important day in people’s lives, and some pretty cool people at that.

During the off season, from time to time I shoot portraits. The images below are Hannah, an actress just at the start of career. Next up on the blog, I’ll be reviewing the last 12 months, which has been pretty epic. Just thinking about the amazing people I have photographed this year and looking back, I feel incredibly lucky to have been able to have been a small part in capturing the stories of their big day. Autumn’s adventures~ Concorde and Natalie Ross in the Studio

This autumn is proving to be full of exiting projects, which as a spin off from shooting awesome weddings, helps inform my approach and fire my creativity. Today, I had the pleasure of shooting the album cover for vintage pop sensation Natalie Ross‘ new EP which is currently being finished and be on iTunes real soon! Here’s a portrait of Natalie from today, looking gorgeous!

Last week, I was at an airfield shooting on board one of the last concorde planes in the UK. The shoot, which is an editorial bridal, will be appearing early next year in a leading bridal magazine. I was working with two of my favourite wedding professionals- the super talented hair and make up artist Gemma Sutton, and leading wedding stylist Alex, the Bijou Bride.

Back in the spring, I also shot a Dolls House styled bridal shoot, which will be appearing soon in the magazine Unique Bride. As the days get shorter and Christmas approaches, I’ll soon be in planning mode as I begin scheduling the engagement portraits for my couples who are getting married in 2013. I have so many amazing clients and weddings to shoot next year, it promises to be epic. Dave x

Great Gatsby Bridal Shoot at Nonsuch Mansion, Surrey

And here it is, at last I can share with you the photos from the Great Gatsby bridal and groom photo shoot that I did back in January at the deliciously decadent Nonsuch Mansion in Cheam, Surrey. The amazing vintage loving team behind the shoot were- the expert Bijou Bride on styling and planning, the talented Gemma Sutton on Hair and Make Up, assisted perfectly by Amy Elizabeth. Headpieces were from the magical hands of Donna Crain, who crafted a piece especially for the shoot.

Summer of Love Shoot

The quirky, vintage style of the characters in the movie inspired the stylist, Sara from wedding blog Under The Vintage Veil with perfect hair and make up by Emma J from Gemma Sutton. South of France Shoot at Chateau Les Carrasses

Last year I was lucky enough to fly off down to the South of France and photo Donna Crain‘s bridal headpieces in a shoot styled by Sonia from Want That Wedding. Kathryn modeled Donna’s pieces, and also a selection from top bridal hair and make up artist Gemma Sutton‘s collection that she designed in collaboration with Donna. Gemma was there to complete Kathryn’s look for the shoot. The shoot is featuring on Love My Dress soon which I’m really excited about. Featured in Vogue Magazine, Chateau Les Carrasses is a luxury holiday retreat deep in the French countryside and marketing manager Kerry made us so welcome and I could have easily stayed on for a few weeks exploring the vineyards and windy roads with our hosts Morag and Graham. The gorgeous dresses were from Sabina Motasem and pretty stationery is from The French Etiquette. Dave x

News Update- Exciting times for MVW

You may have noticed a lack of activity by me over the last couple of weeks, and whilst I wait for the wedding season to kick in, I’ve been busy behind the scenes, trying to secure a brighter future for Modern Vintage Weddings. I’m expanding the amount of advertising I currently do, from zero. I’ve been looking at having a banner on a wedding blog and am happy to say that soon you’ll see MVW as a sponsor on Under The Vintage Veil. It’s very exciting as I have been lucky enough to have my work feature on Under the Vintage Veil in the past and love Sara’s writing.

Something I’m really looking forward to is The Alternative Wedding Fair on September 16th at the Picadilly Institute, London. If you’re going make sure to say hello! You may have seen that I also photographed the amazing Donna Crain‘s collection of vintage inspired headpieces. The shoot was expertly styled by Sonia from Want That Wedding, featuring hair and make up by top bridal MUA Gemma Sutton, in the South of France at Chateau Les Carrasses. The shoot will be featured soon on the great wedding blog Love My Dress! very happy with that one!

Another styled shoot I worked on back in January was a Great Gatsby inspired wedding party at Nonsuch Mansion in Surrey. Styled magically by the Bijou Bride and featuring a host of top wedding suppliers including Gemma Sutton once more, the shoot will be appearing in print in the first edition of the brand new wedding magazine Unique Bride. It will be the first time an MVW shoot has been published and I’m very proud and happy for the team involved.

And so onto the most important part of my work- photographing couples in love and their wedding days. This year I’m up and down the country, and also on a plane for my first destination wedding in Italy. All my couples I can honestly say I’m looking forward to photographing and can’t wait to show you the results. I’m loving 2012 and hope you are too. Dave x

Love on the Line Styled Photoshoot

At the end of last year I got in touch with the lovely people at The Watercress Line, a fully working steam railway line near Alton, Hants, about the possibility of doing a styled love shoot on and around the trains and stations. When they accepted I was over the moon! I’ve been to a couple of War on the Line, 1940′s themed events at The Watercress Line and couldn’t wait to create my story of an eloping couple escaping the crowds to a dream destination, maybe somewhere like Bournemouth. Inspiration and firing my creativity

What inspires me and my style? I thought I’d share some of the things that I turn to when looking for ideas or maybe just to fire my creative thinking. I’ve read a lot of books on the inner artist and releasing the muse, although with photography I usually find that films and paintings are for me the best way to approach composing the perfect photograph. One painter that I admire greatly, for his sense of nostalgia and romance, is Jack Vettriano.

Looking at the image above I think it is the sense of occasion that really gets me. The carefree abandonment that he’s depicted, as the couple dance away.. it’s the spirit of the painting that I connect with. Capturing the spirit, whether its fun or romantic or otherwise, is what I always aim for. I recently shot a Great Gatsby inspired bride and groom photoshoot at Nonsuch Mansion. My approach to this shoot was to take natural reportage photos of the models mostly, but for the love shoot element, I took inspiration from the 1974 movie version. One of the scenes had this shot of Gatsby looking at Daisy, with his reflection showing in the mirror. I love this double view we have of the two.

I think that you can find inspiration wherever and whenever it strikes- it could be something that directly inspires you to attempt to recreate your idea or version of what you have found, like I have above, or indirectly when you see something evocative which stirs something inside you. Dave x

February 2012 Adventures

Back at the start of this month I was still in France with Gemma Sutton, Sonia from Want That Wedding and Kathryn Jones buying too much food at the Hypermarche, as it’s always better to have too much in the fridge than go hungry! The shoot was for Donna Crain, bridal jewellery maker genius and here are some Instagram images from my phone, including the amazing Chateau Les Carrasses, the venue for the shoot ~

Last week I shot fashion label Kissed Wrist’s new vintage inspired collection with Hair and Make Up by Victoria Poland, expertly modeled by Sophie. Not strictly related directly to weddings, fashion assignments help inform my wedding photography by practising my skills and ideas.

And finally in a jam packed month it was the packed National Wedding Show at Olympia. I’ll let you enjoy the pictures as I head for a lie down! Dave x

January round up ~ Nonsuch Mansion and Beziers

After the epic day trip to Paris and night at the Cafe De Paris for the Wedding Industry awards (see post here) earlier in the month, the last week of January was HECTIC, in an amazing way! After months of planning with Alex Merri and Gemma Sutton, I photographed a 1920′s styled wedding shoot at the incredible Nonsuch Mansion. Featuring a host of wedding industry pro’s and suppliers including dresses from Circa Brides and a car from BC Chauffeurs, the shoot will hopefully be gracing a magazine soon. Here are some behind the scenes shots~

The day after the shoot at Nonsuch, it was all aboard for a flight to Beziers and a shoot at Chateau Les Carrasses. The grown up, sexy theme was styled by Sonia at Want That Wedding and featured the amazing headpieces of Donna Crain. Hair and Make up for this shoot was by Gemma Sutton.. wow.
